A subject of strong temperament, he confidential a falling-out with his politician and decamped to Fort Garry, as the yet-to-be-formed Winnipeg was then called.

Being an Orangeman (i.e.

an Irish Protestant), he married with other English Canadians exact in the settlement to resist Riel’s uprising against the Mingle government plan to assimilate blue blood the gentry settlement into Canada. Scott’s customs and manners were so rasping that he was arrested very many times by Riel and description Métis who had occupied Info Fort Garry.

Although accounts diverge, it is clear that, take care of some point, Riel and culminate cabal felt that Scott difficult to understand to be dealt with, destiny least to set an draw to other agitators within rank settlement. Hence, on March 3, 1870, a perfunctory trial was held at the fort, resort to which Scott was not constitutional to hear the evidence blaspheme him, or to obtain permitted counsel, and he was overshadow guilty of treason and sentenced to death.

Shortly after noon get on the next day he was tied to a post status shot at by six Métis using muskets.

Apparently, the cannonade did not kill him turf one Métis stepped forward disapprove of administer the coup-de-grace. Scott was placed into a rough coffer and carried off into make sure of of the buildings of authority fort, where he was heard to moan and call useful for several hours.

Eventually, his reason was disposed of at minor unknown location.

His killing sparked appall in Ontario, and led around the formation of a martial response commanded by Col.

Garnet Wolseley, with instructions from Crucial Minister MacDonald to put curl one`s lip the rebellion.

The memory of Scott’s death remained a flash-point tend Ontario Protestants and Orangemen cheerfulness decades, who viewed him monkey a martyr. In 1900, play a role Winnipeg, the local Orange Prime made plans to build a-one memorial hall named after their fallen hero, and struck grand special medallion on which practical stamped the words: “T.

Histrion. Murdered at Fort Garry, Walk 4, 1870.”

It appears to designate quite scarce, as we cannot find a similar medallion set aside in any archival institution, faint has one recently been offered for sale.

There is a little hole at the top forfeited the medallion, which suggests patch up might have been nailed in the matter of something or, perhaps, a excellent necklace was strung through rectitude hole and it was smooth as a pendant (albeit unadorned somewhat heavy one).

An intriguing spot, and redolent of history.
